About South Park™

South Park is an American animated sitcom created for the Comedy Central television network. The story revolves around four children – Stan, Kyle, Eric Cartman, and Kenny – and their bizarre adventures in and around the fictional Colorado town.

South Park remains Comedy Central's highest rated, longest running program and one of the most popular licensed entertainment properties. The series debuted in 1997 with great success, consistently earning the highest ratings of any basic cable program. South Park is currently the #1 show on the Comedy Central television network and has been #1 cable original comedy series aimed towards males 18-34 for 7 years running.

As of 2011, a total of 230 episodes have aired during the South Park's fifteen seasons and the show is presently contracted to continue past 2013. A celebration of its success for 15 years, "the Ultimate South Park Experience" will be presented at Comic-Con and a DVD of fan-favorite episodes is due for release in 2012.

The animated series continues to be a huge international phenomenon, with program distribution in 136 countries and active licensing programs in 20 countries. South Park has had enormous successes in the worlds of: cable television, feature film, product merchandising, international distribution, awards and recognition:

  • In 2007, Time magazine included the show on its list of the "100 Best TV Shows of All Time"
  • In 2007, Rolling Stone declared it to be the funniest show on television since its debut 10 years prior
  • In 2008, South Park was named the 12th-greatest TV show of the past 25 years by Entertainment Weekly
  • The character of Cartman ranked 10th on TV Guide's 2002 list of the "Top 50 Greatest Cartoon Characters"
  • In 2006, Comedy Central received a Peabody Award for South Park's "stringent social commentary" and "undeniably fearless lampooning of all that is self-important and hypocritical in American life"
  • South Park has been nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program eight times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009.)
  • The show has won the award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour) three times
  • The Imaginationland trilogy of episodes won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour Or More) in 2008
