About NHL®
The National Hockey League (NHL)® operates a professional ice hockey league
of 30 franchised clubs, of which 24 are located in the United States and 6
in Canada. The NHL® is widely considered to be the premier professional ice
hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues
of the United States and Canada. Every year, The Stanley Cup, the oldest
professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded to the league
playoff champion.
The 2010 Stanley Cup play-offs saw the largest audience in the history of the sport: this success has resulted in a 66 percent rise in NHL advertising and sponsorship revenue.
While the NHL® is very prominent in Canada, where hockey is the most popular
of the four major sports (MLB, NFL, and NBA), it continues to gain
popularity in America. In 2008, with the shift toward using digital
technology, the NH®L was able to market to fans and capitalize on that
growing popularity. As a result, in 2009 the NHL® drew a record number of
sponsors and television viewers. In the United States, NHL® games are aired
nationally by Versus and NBC.
